Zlatý retrívr má srst zvlněnou nebo dobře zpeřenou, s hustým, vodě odolným podsrstím. Zbarvení je v jakémkoliv odstínu zlaté nebo krémové, ne však červené nebo mahagonové. Několik bílých chlupů pouze na hrudi je povoleno.
